Introduction: The Chapters of Our Lives
Where the “Second to Last Chapter” fits into your life…and the incredible potential it holds for you to find new meaning and purpose.
Don’t Look for It. It Finds You
Many people seek a noble cause, but worry they will never find it. Actually, “it” is already seeking you.
The Voices to Hear
The “voices” that shaped Paul Wilkes’s life…and the voices that have shaped yours and are now summoning you to embark on a new journey to new meaning in your life.
The Wrong Voices To Hear
There will always be those voices who doubt your sincerity, your abilities, voices that tell you to “just relax” at this point in your life. Yes, you hear them, but they are not the voices that will guide you to new purpose in your life.
Yes, a play on words, but so accurate to describe what these years can bring. Your new purpose will feel so good and right you will sometimes even feel a bit guilty about it. But don’t. You have just lined up with what is best inside you and you should feel selfish in your selflessness.
Why We Resist
Who, me? you might ask. Is this right time? Do I want a new challenge? The questions that will come up …. And the reasons why we can answer them boldly.
One Example: My Second to Last Chapter
The smile of a little orphan girl in India, cruelly blinded, changed Paul Wilkes’s life. The story of Homes of Hope, his Second to Last Chapter work.
Some Final Thoughts
Doing good makes you good. In your Second to Last Chapter work, you will sense an inner transformation unlike anything you have experienced in your life. You are living with a new zest, a real purpose, doing something that truly matters.
While I was ready for a major change in my life, I hated the word “retirement” and all of the images it conjures up. When I read Paul Wilkes’s book a whole new mindset emerged. Firstly, he so aptly named this phase of life…”the SECOND to the last chapter”. It wasn’t time for the rocking chair, but it wasn’t time for a demanding career either. Secondly, he builds a very good case that what you end up doing in this phase is nothing you can plan for….it FINDS you. I thought that was crazy until it happened to me. I would have never planned to be involved in starting an All-Girls Leadership School. Nothing about that was in my next “5 year plan”. Wilkes’ brilliant book will walk you through how to let go of the old and open yourself completely to a new and fulfilling Second to the Last Chapter. I assure you it will be the best chapter of your life.
